Step Inside Our New Geothermal Greenhouse
Take a quick tour with us to see how our underground heating works, how we trellis our tomatoes without ladders, and who takes care of the pollination.
Thank you to my daughter Sierra for filming.

Welcome to the greenhouse. I’ll show you around.
First, it's pretty loud in here, so I'm going to turn off the fan.
There's a geothermal system underground that black pipe Over there takes hot air from up high in the greenhouse. It runs in a series of pipes underground and comes out in this corner. We don't think it will allow us to grow year-round, but we're hoping it will extend the season quite a bit.
So, we have a little bit of everything growing in here to see what does its best inside.
Over here are the tomatoes, and we've got a pretty cool trellising system where, as they grow taller, we actually lower and lean them onto these wickets, so it's always at workable height, and we don't have to use a ladder to harvest.
Come on over to the cucumbers.
They're in a similar system, and we've got onions growing with the tomatoes and lettuce, the cucumbers. We've got every bit of ground is pretty well covered.
Here's a big one (cucumber). There we go. I'll bring this to you guys this week.
And I want to show you the bumblebee hive. So we have sealed off the greenhouse as best we can so pests can't get in.
There's cilantro, fennel, carrots…
Sierra (00:01:40.18)
Which are my favorite part!
Kate (00:01:43.18)
…Lettuce, parsley, cabbage.
You can see see what the cabbage moths did before we sealed off the vents.
Sierra (00:01:48.33)
Now they're wholly cabbage!
Kate (00:01:50.02)
So we still need somebody to pollinate the tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers and zucchini…
Sierra (00:01:59.59)
…and all those thingies.
Kate (00:01:52.32)
We have a bumblebee hive here that just lives right in the greenhouse, and they do all that pollination work for us.
Sierra (00:02:32.28)
One's coming out.
Kate (00:02:37.16)
So, thank you!
It's such an honor to be able to have you on this journey with us as we're learning how to grow in the greenhouse, how to maximize the stuff you want, and I'll see you this week at market.
